Ever wonder what it’s really like to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in NYC? We interviewed an anonymous senior student who’s been through the highs and lows of FIT. Here’s what they said and everything they wish they knew before stepping onto campus.
1. Making friends can be challenging 🥺
“People are wrapped up in their own projects, and personalities are BIG. If you’re an introvert, be ready to push yourself out of your comfort zone.” Pro tip? Compliment that killer outfit and just say hi.
2. Competition is brutal 🏁
“FIT is competitive—like, steal-your-designs competitive (seriously).” This isn’t every major, but fashion design is cutthroat. “In some programs, people are chill. But still, bring your A-game.”
3. Classes are LONG ⏰
“Three-hour classes. Yeah. Enough said.” Find focus hacks early, because drifting off halfway through is all too easy.
4. You probably won't get your dream job as a freshman 💼
“Most big companies want students who can commit full-time, which doesn’t work with a freshman’s schedule.” Don’t sweat it. Campus jobs are flexible, and internships will come.
5. NYC will drain your wallet 🗽
“NYC will eat your bank account alive.” Create a budget and stick to it—it’s easy to get carried away when everything’s at your fingertips.
6. Stop trying to ‘Keep Up’ 👠
“There’s pressure to look a certain way, but honestly? No one really cares.” Wear what you like and own it—people will respect you more for being authentic.
7. Professors are the real MVPs 👨🏫
“Professors aren’t just teachers—they’re industry pros with connections.” Get to know them early for opportunities you won’t find elsewhere.
8. Campus events are worth it 🏫
“Go to Orientation Week and other events. I made some of my best friends there.” Plus, it’s a great way to get comfy with the city and campus life.
9. Group projects can be ... a mess 🤪
“Someone’s always slacking off, but it’s a good way to meet people.” Take charge and don’t be afraid to talk to your professor if there’s a problem.
10. Be. Yourself. 💯
“Yeah, it’s cliché, but it’s true.” There’s no one better to be than yourself. Stay focused, do what makes you happy, and don’t try to conform to fit in.
We asked our anonymous friend for one final advice and here's what they said: "Take care of yourself and make the most of your time at FIT. Stay true, and the right people and opportunities will come to you."
